Hi guys,

the high level brake light isn't working on my 1999 2.3 GLX Gal. I did a bit of investigating and have noticed a brown wire which runs from the high level brake light to the n/s/r light lense isn't connected to anything. I'm not very good on car electrics so I'm asking you guys where it's connected to?

The Haynes manual wiring diagramme isn't very helpfull.

Thanking you in advance,

cheers,

Kev

Hi Kev, the wiring in the tailgate normally does not have a seperate wire going from the brake light to the rear light it just has a plug going to the brakelight with two wires in it.

It is possible someone has tried wiring directly to the brake light on the rear lamp due to a wiring problem.

If I was checking it I would get either a multimeter to check the voltage or a test light to see if there is a power supply going to the brake light when the brake pedal is depressed, if not test which pin on the rear lamp has a supply for the brake light and tap into that.(this may be what has happened hence the brown wire)

Hi Dave,

thanks.  I will check this. Yeah, looks like someone has been at the wires before as I found other wires that have been joined / spliced  together. The high level brake light had been working before so as you have said, it may have come apart from the left hand brake contact on the back of the lamp.

Cheers

I'm not sure the high level lamp is wired to the left tail light......

Most rear lamp problems are either faulty /incorrect bulbs or broken wiring in one of the two rubber gaitors to the tailgate.

As seatkid says, almost certainly broken wires in the tailgate gaiter, or a previous botched repair of the same. The only wires going into the tailgate should be those from the main loom.

Hi Chaps,

the problem was to be broken red & black wires in the loom on the right hand side. Sorted now, thank you chaps.

The brown wire on the left hand side didn't go any where. Pulled out yards of wire that wasn't connected to anything?

Everything works now as it should.

Cheers,

Kev.
